Eryn Brinie and Kai-Aakmann

by THE EDITORS in DESIGNER PROFILE

Sister labels KAI-AAKMANN and ERYN BRINIE are well-established fashion houses across the globe, though both find their roots in Korea. While ERYN BRINIE produces delicate pieces with feminine touches in lightweight fabrics and subtle colours, KAI-AAKMANN’s newest collection takes inspiration from both the male and female psyche.

Since 2007, KAI-AAKMANN’s head designer, Seoul native Soonjin Park has made waves in the fashion industry by pushing the boundaries of sartorial gender identity. In fact, the philosophy behind KAI-AAKMANN is represented in the brand’s name, which comes from 3 different words, each of which represents some part of what the label is all about. “Aak” represents the inner feminine personality of the man, or the “Anima” (or in the case of the inner masculine personality of the woman, the “Animus”). “Mann” is the German translation for man, and the 2 ideas are joined by the Greek conjunction ”Kai” (and). As a whole, the KAI-AAKMANN philosophy strives to enforce the dualistic nature of the world around us, in fashion and otherwise. The male/female personalities within us influence our behaviour, and of course, our sartorial choices. Using this concept as her inspiration, Soonjin Park has created a harmony between male and female styles.

By breaking down traditional values, Park has introduced that dualistic nature into KAI-AAKMANN clothing – the label incorporates feminine details with masculine aesthetic and vice versa. Look out for tailored trousers in rich colours, pencil skirts in earth tones and oversize sweaters with delicate embellishments. The label also fuses modern and classic style; using a muted color palette, KAI-AAKMANN pieces are timeless and suitable for any occasion, but their unique silhouettes keep them up to date.
